DynamiCity: Empowering walking, cycling and micro-mobility for cancer prevention and cleaner, healthier and better-connected cities
With cancer remaining one of the most critical challenges in global public health, increasing physical activity is one of the most promising drivers for change. Physical activity can significantly reduce overall cancer risk and the risk of cancer recurrence, while also improving cancer survivorship. Increasing the uptake of cycling and walking offers a promising, low-cost, and equitable route to promoting more physical activity. DynamiCity aims to drive a paradigm shift in urban mobility, where transport becomes a strategic means to promote healthy lifestyles, improve well-being, and support cancer prevention and survivorship.
The DynamiCity project focuses on several key objectives to prevent cancer and improve the quality of life for diverse target groups:
- Increasing Walking and Cycling: Up to 30% increase in modal share of walking and cycling in 6 follower cities, and improved active- and micro-mobility (AMM) conditions in all 12 living labs (LLs)
- Supporting Climate-Neutral Cities: Partnered cities advance in achieving their climate neutrality targets and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transport by at least 15%
- Demonstrating Health Gains: Demonstrated quantified health gains from active travel, including improved physical activity, wellbeing, quality of life (QoL), and symptom management for cancer survivors.

In the DynamiCity project we are the experts on the intersection of physical activity and cancer. Here is how OAC is involved:
- Adapting the OAC-Training: Within DynamiCity OAC will build upon the original OAC-Training by tailoring it to AMM. It will 1) include guidance relevant to walking and cycling, such as physical considerations for cancer survivors engaging in active travel, safety planning, psychological readiness, and environment-specific support strategies, and 2) be piloted with an expanded audience, including healthcare professionals (e.g., oncologists, therapists) as well as transport and mobility experts.
- Training Professionals Across Health and Mobility: OAC will develop and deliver an interdisciplinary training curriculum targeting >180 health and mobility professionals, enabling them to develop active travel prescription pathways, facilitate active travel and embed project results in their everyday practice.
- Sharing Results Across Europe: Dissemination of project results: In addition to the partners, OAC plays a key role in sharing and disseminating the insights and methods gained from the real-world laboratories across Europe to ensure widespread use of the project results.
Working Together to Improve Health Literacy
We select our projects carefully to ensure we are making a lasting and sustainable impact. By focusing on meaningful initiatives, we empower individuals to take charge of their own health.
