What Happens When Great Passions Come Together?

In recent years, OAC has demonstrated that it is often the unique, unconventional, and courageous approaches that drive progress – not only in its home country but also across Europe and internationally.

The connection with Nijaz Memic, coach of the Paralympic Ski Team, began in 2020 during the Göttfried Inclusion Cup, a ski race at Lake Tegernsee. Unfortunately, the event, like so many others, was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, Petra and Nijaz stayed in contact throughout this time. Now, a European consortium is collaborating with OAC on a Capacity Building in Sport project proposal to advance cancer prevention in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was Nijaz who proposed the idea of sending an OAC team to the international Born2Ski race.

Idea to Action. Here are the skiers competing as a team for a great cause:

When I got the invitation to join the OAC team, I had no hesitation – I knew I wanted to be part of this remarkable organization. The OAC slogan, #stayfitgethealthy, aligns perfectly with my own mission. Another important reason for my involvement is to contribute to projects that help people worldwide. As a Paralympian and a person with a disability, I feel a responsibility to support those seeking their place in society.

Sadly, some of my friends have lost their battle with cancer, while others continue to fight. This is another reason I’m proud to join the OAC Advisory Board. With my years of experience and education in physical activity, I believe I can make a modest yet meaningful contribution to OAC’s mission and vision.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Petra Thaller has been a true inspiration to me – motivating me to become part of this humane and humanitarian OAC mission.
– Nijaz Memic

I have been active as an OAC ambassador since its founding in 2015 and joined the Advisory Board in 2021. Although I haven’t participated in classic ski races for decades, I am thrilled to be part of the OAC team for this meaningful event!

When Nijaz suggested the idea of an OAC ski team, I was immediately excited – even though it feels like I haven’t raced in 100 years! For a good cause, experience matters less than enthusiasm. Since committing, I’ve realized that my competitive spirit hasn’t faded over the years. Let’s go for it – doing good through our participation and inspiring everyone who faces and overcomes challenges in life.
