Physical Activity for Prevention and Preservation

On June 28 2024, during the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Congress in Munich, Outdoor Against Cancer (OAC) led an inspiring and impactful session at the Digestive Cancers Europe Masterclass. The workshop showcased the transformative power of Physical Activity & Outdoor Sports as a cornerstone of cancer prevention and supportive care, helping to preserve quality of life for survivors.

Exploring the Four Key OAC Pillars

Participants gained valuable insights into how the Four Key OAC Pillars –

  1. Physical Activity & Outdoor Sports
  2. Balanced Nutrition
  3. Sustainability & Nature
  4. Physical & Mental Well-being

– combine to form a holistic, sustainable approach to health. The session provided actionable takeaways on optimising overall well-being, promoting sustainable living, and empowering cancer survivors to embrace a vibrant and balanced lifestyle.

Expert Insights from Leading Specialists

The session featured specialists, whose unique expertise brought depth and clarity to the discussion:

Ph.D. Rūdolf Cešeiko (Riga, Latvia)

As an exercise physiologist and leading expert at the Exercise Oncology Clinic, Dr. Cešeiko shared groundbreaking research on aerobic endurance training and neuromuscular force-generation in cancer care. His work focuses on creating effective exercise programs for cancer prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation.

Dr. Tom Degenhardt (Munich, Germany)

As OAC’s Medical Director and a passionate advocate for outdoor activity, Dr. Degenhardt highlighted the evidence-based benefits of physical activity as a supportive therapy. Drawing from his personal love of climbing, hiking, and other outdoor pursuits, he shared how these activities inspire resilience and improve patient outcomes.

The OAC Training Program

A highlight of the session was the introduction of the OAC Training Program, offering practical tools for supporting cancer patients and survivors through tailored exercise programs. The program also includes certifications, such as 60 CME credits for Medical Doctors, and the opportunity to contribute to global cancer initiatives.
